Year 9 English Core Unit 4:
Beyond Borders

This unit of work has been created for Year 9 English at Bossley Park High School, for the new NSW English Syllabus developed around the Australian Curriculum.

The focus concept for this unit of work is PERSPECTIVE.
Students will explore a range of texts that present different cultural perspectives, including the migrant and refugee experience, with a focus on developing empathy. Issues surrounding refugees and asylum seekers are prominent in Australian society today, and an exploration of this topic will develop students’ understanding of the refugee experience, and reinforce the idea that we are all global citizens.

The cross-curriculum priority of focus for this unit is Asia, and Australia's relationship with Asia.

Program Credits
This unit was developed by Lisa Edwards as part of an English Faculty curriculum development project at Bossley Park High School, however, there are some key sources of ideas, activities and resources to be credited.

The NSW DEC Curriculum Coordination and Leadership Team, with teachers from Billabong High School, created an amazing unit called "In Their Position", which is available through the DEC Intranet. "Beyond Borders" uses and adapts some ideas and resources from that.

Thanks also to Paula Madigan and the team at Coffs Harbour High School, who created a unit called "No Turning Back". Paula presented this at the ETANSW 2013 Conference in collaboration with Viviana Matiello. Ideas and activities have also been drawn from this unit. Thanks to our wonderful colleagues for sharing!
